A controversy has arisen over AI-generated studies submitted to the ICLR academic conference. Three AI labs, Sakana, Intology, and Autoscience, claimed to have generated studies accepted for workshops. While Sakana informed ICLR leaders and obtained consent, Intology and Autoscience did not. Critics argue this undermines the peer review process, which is labor-intensive and voluntary. Some academics express concern about the ethical implications of using peer-reviewed venues to benchmark AI technologies. Sakana withdrew its paper due to citation errors, highlighting issues with AI-generated content in academia.
