The U.S. Department of Commerce has enacted a final rule prohibiting the sale and import of connected vehicles from China and Russia, citing national security concerns. This ruling also prevents Chinese companies, including WeRide and Pony AI, from testing self-driving vehicles on U.S. roads. National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard emphasized the risks of foreign-linked vehicle technology. The software ban will commence in the 2027 model year, while hardware restrictions will take effect in 2029. Exemptions exist for vehicles over 10,000 pounds, allowing BYD to continue its operations in California.
