The European Union has imposed hefty fines on Apple and Meta for violations of its Digital Markets Act. Apple faces a €500 million penalty for not allowing app developers to inform customers about alternative purchasing options. Meanwhile, Meta has been fined €200 million for mandating users agree to personalized ads on Instagram and Facebook or pay for subscriptions. Both companies plan to appeal the fines, which come amidst rising tensions between the EU and the U.S. over trade policies. Cease-and-desist orders have also been issued to both firms.
