General Motors has announced a layoff of 500 employees at its Canadian factory due to declining demand for its BrightDrop electric vans. The company will reduce operations by cutting one of two shifts at the CAMI plant in Ontario, planning a 20-week idling period starting in May. This decision comes amid BrightDrop's challenging history, which includes a recall of vans last year over battery fires. GM previously created BrightDrop as a separate entity in 2021 but integrated it back into the company in 2023, later moving it under the Chevy brand.
