A significant ransomware attack on Change Healthcare, owned by UnitedHealth, has resulted in one of the largest breaches of health data in U.S. history, affecting over 100 million individuals. The attack, which began in February 2024, led to widespread outages in healthcare services as the company shut down its systems to contain the breach. UnitedHealth confirmed the involvement of the ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware gang, which demanded and received a $22 million ransom. Despite the payment, the hackers reemerged with a new extortion scheme, publishing sensitive patient data. The breach highlights severe cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the health sector.
