openSNP to Shut Down Over Data Privacy Concerns Amid Global Authoritarian Trends
openSNP, a prominent open-source genetic data repository, will cease operations by the end of April, as confirmed by co-founder Bastian Greshake Tzovaras. The decision follows rising concerns about data privacy, especially after 23andMe's financial troubles and fears of genetic data misuse by authoritarian governments. Established in 2011, openSNP allowed users to share genetic data for research purposes, boasting nearly 13,000 users at its closure announcement. Greshake emphasized the need for responsible stewardship of sensitive data in the current political climate, marking the site's shutdown as a protective measure.
