SoftBank Group has announced plans to acquire Ampere Computing, a semiconductor designer, for $6.5 billion in an all-cash deal. The acquisition aims to enhance SoftBank's investments in AI infrastructure and will position Ampere as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Carlyle and Oracle, Ampere's major investors, will exit the company as part of the deal. SoftBank, already a significant player with Arm Holdings, is looking to bolster its capabilities in AI and computing. The deal is expected to close in the latter half of 2025, furthering SoftBank's commitment to AI innovation.
