Tesla has received a ride-hail permit from the California Public Utilities Commission, allowing it to commence its robotaxi operations. The permit designates Tesla as a transportation charter-party carrier, but limits its current services to employees only, preventing public bookings. Although the company has been preparing for this shift since last year, it still requires additional permits to test fully-autonomous rides. The robotaxi service, teased for launch in October 2024, aims to make California its testing ground for future expansions.
